Sailing was one of Weston’s favourite hobbies, but he rarely painted the sea. He often went cruising along the coast and belonged to the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club for over 25 years. One reviewer thought this was a basis for the feeling of the strong drive of the wind in his paintings.

"There is the bite of the gale in the rhythm of nearby turbulent waters in these pictures, or of wind-swept clouds forming decorative patterns."(72)

He raced for several years, and one of his few marine paintings, Yacht Race, is of his star sailboat, Daphne. It is now a trophy at the R.V.Y.C. for star boat racing.(73)
